Fun Family Activities

Saturdays are very special, indeed, at the Randall, offering a variety of drop-in hands-on activities for families. Saturday Science is a morning workshop designed for kids to explore science concepts through simple investigations. Afternoon Art workshops provide the opportunity for artists of all ages to get creative and make fun art projects. Chock-full of fun family activities, the Randall Museum is definitely one of the best places to be on Saturdays.

Third Friday Bird Hike @ Randall Museum Parking Lot

Join Randall Museum staff ornithologist Dominik Mosur as we explore Corona Hill in search of birds as well as plants, insects and other wildlife. We will log our sightings into the ebird.org database and discuss the importance of citizen science contributions to our knowledge of the natural world. habitat restoration and bird population dynamics in urban areas.

The hike features some elevation gain, rough terrain and changeable weather so please dress accordingly.

Space is limited to 16 people so email dmosur@randallmuseum.org to reserve a spot.

Bug Day! @ Randall Museum

Check out the incredible extravaganza of insects at the Randall Museum’s popular Bug Day event celebrating everything insect with hands-on science and art activities, games, live music, movies and more.

Join in the creepy-crawly fun and learn how important these little creatures are to the earth and to our survival here. Kids and their families can make their own fabulous bug-related crafts to take home, see and touch live exotic insects, take a scientific look at insects through microscopes, compete in the Insect Olympics, and perhaps even EAT a bug or two. This year, the Randall brings back the Bug Costume contest – complete with celebrity judging. Come in your insect-inspired costume and maybe win a prize!

The San Francisco Beekeepers Association will have a hive of live honeybees on display. Kids can watch beekeepers at work and learn about these amazing pollinators, plus there will be honey collected from hives all over the city and other bee-made products for sale.

Other participating community members include California Plant Society, San Francisco Zoo, Oakland Zoo, Tree Frog Treks, San Francisco Microscopical Society, and Don Bugito Edible Bugs.

Admission is FREE with free and low-cost activities

Venture into the Randall Museum’s new live animal exhibit, Wild in California, and join one of the animal keepers in an open discussion about the museum’s wildlife residents. Learn how the keepers care for the animals and how and where these creatures live in the wild. Kids and families will meet some of the animals up-close and can ask the keeper questions to find out more about their favorites. Visitors can meet a snake, check out a barn owl, or maybe even touch a tortoise.

Birding the Hill @ Randall Museum parking lot near the front gate entrance

Join the Randall Museum’s resident birding guide for a Golden Gate Bird Alliance sponsored bird walk on Corona Hill. This is a moderate/strenuous hike that includes a large staircase and some rocky terrain. Bring your own Binoculars. (BYOB!) Meet at 8 am at 199 Museum Way in the front yard of the Randall Museum just past the curved entrance gate. There’s parking on site. Muni 37 Corbett line stops 2 blocks away for those using public transportation.
